I attended the Ralph Lauren show yesterday, and I feel as though I took a trip to Shanghai and Beijing. (Maybe the motive was their plan to expand through Southeast Asia since they bought back their lincensee last year…) The models wore jade and coral jewelry, red heels and lipstick, and bold prints and textures – and to be sure that the reference was clear, the designer played a cover version of David Bowie’s “China Girl.”
The opening look was a a crisp white shirt tucked into a pair of wool trousers – making my love for menswear-inspired clothing very pleased. From there, the line spoke very directly to this obsession of mine as more and more mannish clothing shimmied down the runway. There was also very elegant and feminine cocktail fare in glossy fabrics – satin blouse, polished leather halter dress, Lurex-shot cashmere hobble skirt, and velvet quilted jacket. There were also a few pieces that were thrown in for show including a China red tuxedo jacket with multicolor dragon embroideries. The show ended with a dramatic series of evening gowns – all that had the eyes of every socialite and New York woman who goes to fabulous evening events. Ralph Lauren continues to represent her perfectly and show her what to wear each season – fall/winter 2011 will be a trip to Southeast Asia…
